Maternity Clothes - 5 Things You Need To Know

Being a first time expectant mama comes with so many unknowns. When I was pregnant with Benjamin I had zero clue what to expect in terms of how my body would change. I tried and failed to find the appropriate maternity clothing before turning myself over to the experts.

ANI + WREN offers a curated collection of stylish maternity clothes and so much more. Owners, sister in law’s and best friends Lani (Ani) and Lauren (Wren) have five kids between them. Wren has 4, Ani has 1 + 1 on the way. So ya, they know a thing or two about styling the bump.

I asked them to share some tips about shopping for maternity, and they were kind enough to help a mama out. So here’s 5 things you need to know about maternity clothes from ANI+WREN.

1. It's never 'too early' to start wearing maternity pieces.

If you’re buying the right pieces, they should be taking you through your entire pregnancy and beyond #beyondthenine. So it's really never too early to start with a few great pieces that will grow with you. Every woman grows and carries differently, your comfort is the only thing you should be concerned about.

2. You don't have to show off the bump right away.

In the early stages, a lot of our mamas prefer to wear more relaxed fitting tops and a-line dresses to help mask the bump until they feel ready to show it off. These pieces will definitely come in handy throughout pregnancy and postpartum.

3. Over the bump or under the bump? There’s no rules!

As we move into fall/winter, leggings and denim are going to be staples in your pregnancy wardrobe. We have styles that work over the bump or under. Do what makes you feel the most confident.

When it comes to pants to wear to work, there’s lots of different fabrics and cuts to flatter every body type. Again, comfort is key and you need to be comfortable throughout the day.

4. Invest in versatile pieces.

We encourage our mamas to invest in versatile pieces that can take you from day to night. A simple black dress can be worn as a casual look with sneakers, to work or even to a black tie event like a wedding -  it's all about choosing the right accessories. We can help with that too!

Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. Pregnancy is a time where you can get away with more comfortable fabrics, even for fancy occasions – just do you!

5. Pregnancy is not the time to reinvent your style.

This is probably our number one piece of advice to our mamas. Choose maternity pieces that fit in with your style. Pregnancy is filled with so many physical and emotional changes already, you don’t have to compromise your personal style. Think of your bump as your greatest accessory! Embrace it, it’s a beautiful thing.
